A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!

A number of us classmates in the Hiliners61 group have been sending emails to some of us filled with memories about our school (Valley High, St. Kates, or College High), about Valley City, and about life in general during the four years from 1957-1961. Your Blogmeister posted those memories in the "comments" section of this post. But we ALSO want YOUR memories and comments on this post - OR comment on any photo or item on this blog.

To read the memories, click on "comments" below and, when you do, you'll see a blank field for YOU to post your memory or comment. Please do!  Just type your comment and when you click the "profile" button, enter your name (first or full) in the "Name/URL" field. Then click "post comment." You'll then see a screen asking you to identify letters making up a word. That's a security device so Google knows you're human, and not another computer. So do that and you're set.

We'd all LOVE to read YOUR memories!  Click "comments" below, read, and then enter YOUR comments!

I recall the big Valley City fire at Sheppard's Appliance Store when we were in the 7th grade. The firemen fought it all night, but in the end both that store and the S&L burned down. Barbara (Sheppard, now Lang), it was a sad night. But you were in school the next day even so. I remember your desk was on the stage for lack of enough seating and how tired you were that day. We wondered what your dad would do next and were thankful when he rebuilt an even more modern store with furniture included. Then the Fair Store moved in to their new facility next door. It had a balcony where they sold fabric. Remember the JC Pennys Store across the street where the clerks put your money into the cylinder and it was sucked into the tube and traveled to the balcony office where change was made and then returned down the tube to the floor clerk and the waiting customer?

Remember Miss Egge, our 7th grade Eng. teacher? We read Julius Caesar and Rip Van Winkle. She had just 2 or 3 different dresses so usually wore the same thing day after day. She always wore her curly hair tied up with a ribbon around it. She was tall and thin and carried a basket.

Remember Mr. Sabby, our math teacher? His birthday was Feb. 29. He was so patient, didn't even get mad a Roger Taylor who surely put him to the test. He could just look at the puzzled look on my face and he'd explain what he was teaching one more time. He taught us in jr. high and then moved up to high school with us so some had him for 6 years of math. After we left VCHS he was named math Teacher of the Year--a well deserved award I might add.
Mr. Campbell was jr. high science teacher and principal. He showed movies of manufacturing and assembly once a week when 7th and 8th grade had assembly together. We filled that big room with the stage in the front. At Christmas we saw the black and white Christmas movie of the birth of Christ. I recall always being afraid that Mary and Joseph and Jesus would not escape to Egypt before the Romans got to the stable.
Do you recall in Mrs. Bjornson's room in 5th or 6th grade we had been mean to someone on the playground and she required all of us learn I Cor. 13?

Remember our basketball games at the City Auditorium? We were taught the cheers and hollered loudly at all the games. Our two cheerleaders stayed with football and basketball all 4 years. Thanks Sandy and Sandy! Those were fun nights usually following pot luck with close friends. Our junior year, 1960, our Hiliner basketball team won 1st place at the statetournament! There was a big parade welcoming the team into town that Sun. We met them at the I-94 ramp into town.
It's been fun looking back. - Margaret (Peterson) Anderson, Valley High, 61

I remember reading comic books in the basement of Rhea's dad's Woolworth - loving Blue Waltz Perfume and indeed the "smell" of the whole store. Mmmmmmm. The fire was one of the most traumatic days in the life of my parents - mostly I remember afterwards when we rented space a block or so down Central Ave. and opened a temporary store. My job was to transcribe the ledger books that dad rescued from the safe. They were burned around the edges, and I will NEVER forget the smell of burned papers!

Margaret, you have a terrific memory for detail - as I know Beth Carlisle does, and also Rhea, Diane, Larry, Doug and Ron - I'm really grateful to have you refresh my memories. I DO recall the little leather coin purse in the glove compartment of the 1953 Oldsmobile my parents let me "cruise town" in. That's where we put our quarters!

We were blessed to grow up in a time when we could be very innocent and trustful, compared to the difficulties of today. Many many wonderful times and memories to last forever.

I truly look forward to the reunion to be able to connect again with our classmates. It will take us back to our roots and will remind us that our old friends remain our best and loyal friends forever. . . . no matter how many years have separated us. We know the true meaning of "BFF" don't we! - Barbara (Sheppard) Lang, VH61

Wow, I love the prices. I also remember that Sunday afternoons when we "cruised Central" that we'd pitch in a quarter to help with gas! Diane (Sauer) Hughes, VH61

AWESOME Memories!! Keep them coming!

My brother, Chuck, once told me that many of us in the Class of 61 were quite naïve – I am SO VERY GREATFUL for that!

AHHH, teachers – Miss Steinborn – oh yeh!! For the life of me I cannot remember the PE teacher’s name!!!! HELP me out with that??!! I do remember, however, how “cute” our outfits were for gym JJJ

Girls, remember curling our hair before rollers came about!!!

One of you mentioned the sound of the train going across the Hi-Line bridge – I MISS THAT SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye for now!

I remember buying gas at the "Apco" discount station on main for 15 cents a gallon! And you'd tell the guy to "put a couple dollars worth in" and that would fill it. No self service, either. And they'd wash your windows and check your oil! - Larry Gauper, VH61

Our gym teacher was Miss Schiefelbein. She made sure you threw the ball UNDER the net playing volley ball when passing it to the other side, and that you brought GYM SHOES that you wore only for gym!! Yes, life was innocent and good. What a blessing to grow us in such a time. Margaret (Peterson) Anderson, VH61

Does anyone remember the 1920's circa Model A Ford sedan owned by Tim Lorenz (now deceased)? I remember there was a cup for gas donations. In the back seat you could easily crowd at least 3 guys and 3 gals for a joy ride. What fun we had until we cut the top off to make a hunting car out of that beauty.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments and look forward to seeing you in July.
