LouVay White, VCHS/1961, has been involved for a number of years on the "President's House Project" at Valley City State University. She and the local reunion committee hosted the Hiliners61 50th Anniversary attendees at this historic landmark during our 2010 reunion.
A recent issue of
The Bulletin, a publication for alumni and friends of Valley City State University featured a two-page article on the restoration of the President's House, on Viking Drive, near the university on Valley City's south side. The article is posted below; click on the page for a larger view.

open the PDF, if you go to the menu and select the PRINT command, they come in at
full resolution and that's the way
your print will appear.
Thanks, LouVay and thanks to the members of the committee for all the great work restoring the President's House!

This house is one of my favorites in Valley City, and these ladies have worked HARD for years and years to do the rehab, and they even do the housecleaning after someone has rented the place. They deserve huge "atta girls"
Of all the reunions I've attended through the years, our last reunion with our class gathering at the President's House was by far my favorite. A beautiful house and perfect for gathering around the dining room table and other spaces. Thanks LouVay and restoration committee for making this possible. I truly appreciate your loving care and tenacity in making this historic house come alive for us and for the many others who come to enjoy a stay.
While Barb, Larry and I have been working out the blog and posting process, several classmates made comments that didn't get posted. Here, now, is their conversation:

LouVay it's wonderful to see your photo along with others from the President's House (VCSC) Preservation Society in the November "Bulletin" publications from Valley City State. And the pretty picture of the interior reminded me of our 50th celebration held there! Good luck as your group moves forward. (And you should be well paid, but it is a labor of love.)

Thanks, Beth. We opened bids last week and, of course, they are much higher than the money we have presently. I was afraid that the plans the architect drew up were much grander than we could afford. We meet tomorrow to talk it over.
It is beautifully decorated for Christmas and is getting a lot of use. We have made more changes since we used it during the reunion, one of which is replacing the spandrels in two doorways which were removed during the remodeling process. They are beautiful and the craftsman is making one more for the area by the stairway railing.
As our group is getting smaller and older, we are hoping VCSU/Alumni Fouundation will take the responsibility for managing the house. We've done about all the restoration we can do with the money we have available.

Thanks for your work on this project, LouVay. We had a great time using the house during our reunion and I'm sure it will see many more such uses in the future. Your work is indeed appreciated and that of the President's House committee and other volunteers.

Thanks for scanning the article Larry. Enjoyed the history of the house. LouVay looks great in the picture. The house has changed since we've been there. Great job.

Thanks so much to all of you for your comments and to you, Larry for scanning this for all to see. It really has been a labor of love. Even with all the flaws an old house has that are difficult if not impossible to correct, it is important to preserve some of our history. There aren't a lot of grand houses left in VC.

I'm glad that Larry scanned the article too. I thought about it but got busy! The house scenes would make good Chrismas card material. Good luck with the preservation and enhancements. Nice comments from those who have stayed there and enjoyed the obvious care and character of the home. It's a good time to have the publicity and may encourage some donations. Thank you again for your leadership and "sweat equity."

The picture of the dining room all decorated for Christmas is lovely--I keep intending to dream up a reason for renting the house during Christmas time in order to experience the beauty, but nowadays, it is booked up so quickly that it's hard to even think about doing that. But it would be a perfect place for a Christmas party. Perhaps the North Dakota contingent of the Class of 1961 should plan a Christmas party there for next year!!
