Here's the old mill in Valley City, pictured circa the 1900s on a postcard acquired by Jerry Busche, VH61, Jacksonville, in the Sunshine State. Thanks, Jerry. If anyone has any memories of this business or building, please share your memories in the comments section to this post. Jerry believes it has been torn down, but he writes that the old concrete silos may still be standing. I used to go by this landmark every time I headed for the former KXJB-TV studio on Granger Hill. --der Blogmeister. I have many great memories of the old mill because my family lived right across the river from it for a few years. I passed it twice a day as I went to and came from Lincoln School. When my Grandpa Vaaler worked the night shift there and I was a little tyke, I used to enjoy helping my grandma carry a black lunch bucket across the river for Grandpa's late-night meal. We neighborhood kids used to play pickup baseball and football games on a big lot adjacent to the mill. Also, the concrete "silos" (whatever they were) provided a great backdrop for my brother Denny and me when we used to play corkball there.
I recall catching lots of fish in the river near the large tree in the picture. If I recall correctly the bridge was not there but the bridge piligs were standing and a favorite spot to place the fish bait.
