St Kates Rules Iddy-Biddy Season Spring 1954

St. Catherine’s:  front row,  ( l to r ) Pat Lorenz, Louis Morgan, George Gratz, Pat McCormick, Timmy Lorenz, and Mike Utt.  Back Row—Larry Munz, David Kelley, Howard Hruby, Victor Slag, Tom Stine, Charles Lux, Don Schaack and Coach Harlan Gratz. Thanks to George Gratz and Jerry Busche for identifying Mike Utt whose name was missing in the original article.

Ritchie:  front row ( l to r ) Lyle Pederson, Ronald Morsch, Robert Anderson, Ronald Phillips, Gary Skramstad, Douglas Peterson, Arle Bromberger, student manager;  back row, David Johnson, Lynn Anderson, Gerald Offner, Ronald Marshall, Joel Holden and Duane Lettenmaier, Coach. This is a photo from a scrapbook my mother kept, it is a copy of the one in the original Times-Record article. I expect each team member received one.

Lincoln:  front row   ( l to r ), Jerry Busche, Robert Nielsen, Jimmy Milman, Ross Noeske. Back row, Robert  Nagle, John Paulson, Don Charnetzki, Roger Taylor and Coach Bill Bowen

College School: front row ( l to r )  Tom Bjornson, Henry Kroshus, Kenneth Soroos, Ron Legler, Dennis Sowden, John Overbo. Back  row, Ted Walker, Steve Keeling, Bertil Peterson, Ed Overbo, Roger Larson, Dennis Fiske, Russell Anderson and Hank Wever, coach.          ( Times-Record photos)

A highly successful Iddy-Biddy basketball league season was concluded here recently with St. Catherine’s graders crowned champions. The league, operating under auspices of the city recreation program with Bill Osmond as supervisor and Ron Affelt as league manager, was composed of upper grade boys from the two public grade schools, Saint Catherine's and College school.

Games were played at the Armory on twin courts each Monday and Saturday.

The College finished second, Lincoln third and Ritchie fourth behind St. Kates.

Not until you undertake to do something like this do you realize all the effort Larry has put into the blog. Trying to get as sharp as possible reproductions of a newspaper picture from 56+ years ago was only slightly less than maddening. Those Lincoln Moms had the right idea to have dark shirts and I love that white L, classy. I hope at least the players will recognize themselves and the challenge to you champions from St. Kates is to identify the players in the back row. In the picture there are 8 bodies in that row but the newspaper article only lists 6 players and Coach Harlan Gratz. I know Tom Stine is number 5, who did the Times-Record leave out?

You also might note that in 1954 we were the Iddy-Biddy basketball league and in the following post we became the Itty Bitty league. If anyone has clippings from other sports from those halcyon days of youth forward them to me and I'll post them.

Thanks, Ron, for sharing. These pix filled in a lot of gaps in my recollection of my Iddy-Biddy/Itty-Bitty days. I know it takes a huge effort to scan and optimize faded old grainy newspaper pix, key in all the text, etc. and I really appreciate it.

Ron, thanks for your effort on the old photos, I know the picture of St. Kates is 1954. I have a '50 years ago' article from 1984 Times Record that confirms that date. I think the St. Kates picture does not identify the person on the front row far right, in front of coach Gratz. That person is possibly Michael Utt. The first person on the back row left is Larry Munz and the others fall in line as identified. What great times in such a small town.

I agree with you, George. The kid in front of your brother is Mike Utt.

Ron..you're doing a GREAT job as a trainee blogmeister..you're earning your wings pretty fast here! Good job on the basketball posts and the scans look fine - you're working with some pretty rugged originals. Keep up the good work! I have two more articles, on different subjects, to post soon. Readers: keep coming back!

I remember I went out for Iddy-Biddy league hoops, down at the Armory, and I think it was there I discovered my lack of athletic ability. My jaw and tongue worked better in talking than my legs and hands did in running, shooting and scoring. That's when I decided I better forget basketball and started thinking about radio.
