Update from George Gratz
We received this update (6-22-2010) from George Gratz, St. Kates, '61, on the medical condition of his spouse, Sharon:
"Dear Classmates & Friends: Sharon was involved in an interstate accident where a lady going the opposite direction crossed the median and hit Sharon's car near head on. Sharon was air lifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Her life was on the margin for almost 24 hours. Sharon has multiple internal injuries, and broken bones. At this time we do not see the injuries as life threatening, but Sharon remains in the ICU. I had just arrived on Friday night in Valley City for an annual fishing trip that was to end with the Reunion weekend. After receiving the emergency call Saturday evening I returned to Indiana arrive today at about noon. I will miss seeing all of you at the reunion. I'll on occasions give you an update on the blog. "
Thank you, George, for this report and it's good to hear about the non-life threatening nature of Sharon's injuries; however, it sounds like a challenging road to full recovery. She, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. - Larry Gauper

I've received many emails from conerned classmates and friends. Sharon and I appreciate your caring and prayers.Today Sharon was downgraded to a lesser intensive care and started physical therapy. It was painful for her and for me to watch her stand next to the bed. I can't imagine standing for the first time with several internal injuries, multiple fractures of the pelvis and a broken left knee.
Sharon is feisty women and that is serving her well at this point.
That's good news for us to hear, George, about Sharon's progress. It sounds like she has a lot of spirit and strength..may God be with her during her recovery. Classmates: there is a photo of Sharon with George and Bobby Vee on this blog. Just scroll down a ways. Keep us posted, George, as you're doing. And our best to Sharon..sounds like prayers are being answered. - Larry
It's Friday morning. Last night I did some Google research on Sharon's injuries. The research was scarry. I'm so thankful she is with us. Sharon is a fighter and enduring the pain of physical therapy. I'm not yet sure how long we will be here. I want to thank all of you who are caring about Sharon and praying for her recovery. Enjoy the reunion.
George, good to hear of Sharon's progress so far, although, as you point out, she has a tough road ahead. But it sounds like she has the spirit to get through it. We will certainly miss you both at the reunion, however, we'll be thinking of you two and praying for Sharon's full recovery. Take care and keep us posted. All the best.

It is now one week since the horrific crash. Sharon's body is slowly healing. Together we are learning mobility techniques to be able to move around our home. I expect Sharon will be released tomorrow. We have many good friends who are helping in many ways. The road to recovery may be long, but together we will successful find the end. Those of you driving to the reunion, Drive Safely!
George -- I've been keeping updated via the blog and am so happy to hear that Sharon is recovering. What a life-changing event for all of you!! Best wishes, blessings and prayers are coming your way. Take care.
Thanks Diane and everyone else,
Sharon was released from the hospital on Sunday. We had demonstated to the PT people that we were a good team capable of handling rehabilitation at home.Sharon's body is slowly healing.Today was our best 24 hour period.Sleeping, eating, walking,
sitting and a shower were all maxed out.
Our friends and neighbors are helping and we are greatful.
Thanks for your caring and prayers
